A City Break To Rome
Rome is one of the world’s most historically enchanting cities, boasting great artistic masterpieces, superb restaurants and cafés, Medieval and Renaissance architecture, and excellent shopping destinations. The Hawes & Curtis Times reveals the top things to do on a short break to the Eternal City.
Unmissable Historical Attractions
You can’t go to Rome without visiting the city’s major attractions, and the Colosseum is not to be missed. This massive arena was completed in 80 AD, and seated over 50,000 people. Rome’s most classical ruin – officially called Amphiteatrum Flavium – once hosted gruesome battles between gladiators, prisoners, slaves and wild animals. Another breath-taking monument is the Pantheon which is one of the best preserved ancient buildings in Rome. It was built in 119-128 AD as a temple to the 12 most important classical deities, and since the 7th century, it has been used as a church. When in Rome, you must visit St Peter’s basilica which is the centre piece of the Catholic Church and remains one of the largest churches in the world. Located within the Vatican City, St Peter’s is the most renowned work of Renaissance architecture and is home of Michelangelo’s first major work.
The Best Shopping Destinations
Rome has some of the best places to shop in Italy. The famous Via Condotti is the home of renowned Italian designers, and within this elegant shopping area, you will find the likes of Prada, Armani and Gucci. If you are after a less-known shopping destination, go to the Via del Governo Vecchio, which houses a selection of vintage shops, boutiques, nice bars and restaurants.
