What first inspired you to take up photography?
My mum was an avid photographer so I think that really influenced me most. I first picked up a camera when I was around 7 or 8. I've been hooked ever since.
Why do you find street style photography so compelling?
Street photography has an authenticity to it. The viewer can imagine themselves there, seeing that unusual character. It's also immediate. I can grab my camera and capture an image within minutes.
You have captured dapper men in many cities, which city is the most stylish?
I love London. It's my hometown and a place with such diversity that I always see something new.
Why over the past decade do you think men are returning to a more considered form of attire?
Part of it is just down to the ebb and flow of culture. British men have always had an appreciation of style, whether that's traditional attire for work or dressing up for the football at the weekend. A big influence on today’s interest is the internet as we now have a huge amount of visual information to inform what we chose to wear.
Who is the most stylish man you have ever photographed?
I loved photographing the actor David Gant for my book "Gentlemen". He turned up in a kilt and had his white hair pulled into a pony tail. He has such a sense of self that styling him would have taken away rather than added.
What is your favourite thing about the British fashion industry?
It's not pretentious.
How would you describe your style?
Practical. Hardworking. Simple.
What would you be doing if you were not an award winning photographer and blogger?
I'd love to be a film director. That element of storytelling is always interesting.
Why do you think your renowned men’s style blog, GarconJon.com, is so successful?
I have no idea. I should ask one of the readers sometime.
What was the best piece of style advice you’ve ever received?
Keep it simple. I think that also pertains to life in general.
What is your favourite street style trend this season?
I'm enjoying that a wider leg trouser is being embraced.
What from the Hawes & Curtis Winter 2016 collection would be on your Xmas wish list?
I ride a Vespa so a pair of leather gloves goes a long way!
What item of clothing should every man own?
A good pair of leather shoes.
What do you love about London?
Contemporary life in an historic city.
What is your favourite item of the season from Hawes & Curtis?
The leather Worcester Washbag would make a fantastic Christmas present for my Dad.Click here to shop the 100% leather Worcester washbag.
