Top 10 Christmas Wines
We caught up with Virgin Wines head buyer Andrew Baker to determine the best Christmas tipple to serve at your celebratory dinner. Here are the top 10 wines that will make your festive feast especially memorable…
Champagne Piere Gimonnet Cuis 1er Cru Brut Blanc de Blancs - £30
This wine is delicate and fresh, and finishes with a dry undertow, which sets it apart from wines from other regions. It’s 100% Chardonnay, and carries all of the hallmarks of very good Champagne – the perfect wine to enjoy this Christmas!
Trimbach Riesling - £15.99
This Alsace Riesling is more like a very good dry German Riesling than a richer Alsace style, and that’s what I love about it! It has a refreshing citrus core and verve which make it utterly invigorating. This one will definitely revive you after a long day of cooking Christmas dinner.
Kurt Angerer Kies Gruner Veltliner 2017 - £12.49
This Austrian beauty is the perfect wine for turkey. It’s richly fruited and has plenty of nuance – ginger and spice. It’s also cracking as an aperitif.
Ca' Vegar Custoza DOC 2016 - £11.49
It’s clear that Christmas can cost a fortune if you cater for others as you would yourself! I know this from many years of being rinsed out. What’s needed is a very good quality all-rounder to keep the glasses full. This is it. Ca' Vegar Custoza punches way above its weight, and it’s liked by all but the most fussy.
Domaine La Haute Fevrie Chateau Thebaud Muscadet Sevre et Maine 2014 - £15.99
This shouldn’t really be labelled as Muscadet because it takes the appellation to the next level, one not inhabited by many. It is very pure, very intense and ultimately harmonious.
Billy Bosch Dryland Bushvine Cinsault 2017 - £9.99
Cinsault is so under-rated, but it’s found a second home in the Cape. It’s a lovely alternative to Pinot Noir and is also soft and giving. Chill it slightly and it’ll pair quite nicely with the turkey. Very relaxing to drink on its own too.
Les Galets d'Estezargues 2017 - £10.99
This wine contains minimal sulphur and as a result is very expressive. It has very pretty red fruits on the nose and palate and it shouldn’t give you a hangover.
Domaine de la Charmoise Renaissance Gamay - £19.99
A very expressive red, the Domaine de la Charmoise Renaissance Gamay is a gastronomic wine, waiting for any red meat you may be having over Christmas. An absolute winner in our eyes!
5oS Project McLaren Vale Barbera 2016 - £16.99
A crazy wine from a crazy Aussie. This Barbera is the perfect example of what wine tastes like when there's no financial imperative: he makes so little of it that it's possible to accomplish all his wishes. The result is a super-charged, sour-cherry version of the Italian classic; iron fist in a velvet glove.
Riecine Chianti Classico 2016 - £24
A wine with pure class, the Riecine Chianti Classico is exactly what all Chianti should taste like. It has a lovely delineation of fruit, a structured palate and lovely acidity. It has been made for food. So it’s a must with slow cooked dishes.
